On Sunday June 16th Frilford Heath’s 1st team travelled to Hadden Hill to play their first round match in this year’s Shaw’s League Knock out competition. Conditions were good with a light breeze blowing across the hill making approaches into some of the greens quite challenging particularly on the back 9 which is more exposed.
Hadden Hill are currently unbeaten in section3 of the Shaw’s league so are clearly not a side to be taken lightly however they are well aware that their strength in depth compared to Frilford is quite limited having only 4 category 1 players at their disposal.
The match did not get off to the best of starts with Frilford handing Hadden Hill a walkover in the 1st game due to an unfortunate no show by one of the Frilford team leaving Peter Clements without a foursomes partner or a game against Mark Grootz & Gary Hamilton. Whilst Frilford did have reserves present at Hadden Hill the rules of the league are that once the draw for order of play and opponents on the day has been made, which it had, no player substitutes are allowed. Equally, there is also a time limit, being the reserved venue tee times for the match, which once this slot has expired the game must be handed to the other side.
In true fighting spirit Harry Collins and Chris Little levelled the match with a fine 3&2 win against Lee Fuller and Sam Boffin.
The anchor leg saw Lee White and James Smith, who was playing his first match this year for the team, up against Hadden Hill captain, Rob Perry & his playing partner Steve Pryor. Lee and James played exceptionally well together and the outcome was never in doubt delivering a crushing 6&4 win for Frilford and a 2:1 win to put Frilford into the next stage of the knock-out competition. Well played guys!
Frilford Heath will now face Buckingham Golf Club, currently top of section 2 of the league, in the next round to be played at Frilford before September 8th. The winner of that match will face either Tadmarton Heath or Badgemore Park in the semi-finals which has to be played at a neutral venue before October 20th. Frilford have already played against Tadmarton Heath this year at FHGC coming out comfortable winners 2.5:0.5. Badgemore Park are currently unbeaten and top of section 4 of the league.
