Last Sunday 10 1st teamers headed to East Berks Golf Club to play our first round match in this years Brokenhurst Stag competition against Stoneham. Weather conditions were probably the best of the week, sunny and warm and the course was in pretty good condition although it was clear that 3 of the greens had been undergoing major works and were still recovering so played very slow compared to the rest of the greens.
The Brokenhurst Stag competition has been running since 1983 and is played as 18 holes Foursomes in the morning and 18 holes singles in the afternoon all as scratch competition. All matches must have a result so in the event of a half after 18 holes the match in question must continue to a result. Both competing clubs also play at a neutral venue, in this case East Berks and almost always are given courtesy of the course the week before to familiarise themselves with the venue.
In the morning Foursomes only Elliot Bradley and Peter Clements (making his Brokenhurst event debut) could manage a win against George Kendal and Joe Ellis 4&3. Dave Breslin & Paul Dolton went down 3&2 to Andy Bow & Alan Mew, Jake Dines & Liam Murray lost 2&1 to James Pinolton & Martin Micne, Chris Little & Josh Davies lost 5&4 to Simon Hunt & Callum Watson and finally Jack Hemmings & Joe Richardson went down 3&2 to Andy Hickson and Lawrence Cherry. At lunch this put Stoneham firmly in the driving seat at 4:1 up.
The afternoon 10 singles matches proved to be a much closer affair with wins for Chris Little 3&1, Josh Davies 2&1, Jake Dines 2up, Peter Clements 4&2 and Joe Richardson 6&4.
Elliot Bradley's match after 18 holes was all square so Elliot went up the first extra hole only to be beaten by a well putted birdie which Elliot almost equalled but lipped the putt. Defeats were also handed out by Stoneham to Paul Dolton 3&2, Liam Murray 4&2, Jack Hemmings 4&3 with Dave Breslin's match ending as a half but not taken to a play-off result as it would not have made a difference to the overall result of the match. The singles were therefore finalised 5.5 to 4.5 to Frilford but the overall match ended 8.5 to 6.5 to Stoneham who now move forward to the second round, we wish the the best of luck as it it always some consolation to go out to the eventual winners?
This Saturday June 1st sees a return to the Shaw Gibbs Foursomes league for the 1st team being away to bottom of the table Chipping Norton and hopefully back to winning ways following the last match defeat to Burford 1:2 here at Frilford 2 weeks ago. Burford now head the league having lost only one of their matches so far to The Oxfordshire. Tadmarten Heath lie 2nd having thumped The Oxfordshire 2 weeks ago 3:0 but have already lost 2 matches so far this season to ourselves and Burford. The Oxfordshire are in 3rd place also having lost 2 matches to ourselves and Tadmarton leaving Frilford in 4th place BUT having lost only 1 match so far to Burford so it is still really quite tight in the division 1 table although most of Frilford's remaining matches for this season are now away! Oxford City & Chipping Norton sit in 5th & 6th place in the league having lost 2 & 3 matches respectively.
