Last Saturday March 16th FHGC's 1st team hosted a representative county 1st team from the BB&O Union of Golf Clubs. Needless to say BB&O fielded a very strong group with three +2, two +1 and three scratch handicap golfers, a formidable array of talent against Frilford Heath's combined handicaps totalling 19!
Saturday's conditions for the morning foursomes was a little on the inclement side with intermittent rain and gusting wind which provided a true test of players abilities and nerve in these adverse conditions. One member of BB&O's side "no showed" believing the match to be a day later so Frilford's Mark McMurdo kindly stepped into their breach to play along side his old boss and BB&O Captain, George Wilson.
At the end of the morning rounds on the red course Frilford found themselves in the clubhouse 3:1 up with wins 3&2 for Ashley Walton & Jake Dines, 2&1 for Jon Rusk and Lee White and 3&2 for Peter Clements and Toby Morgan. Only Harry Collins & Jamie Burns were unable to make the foursomes a clean sweep coming up against very in form Sam Whitehead & Jack Haines who played superbly to win 4&3.
For the afternoon singles Mark McMurdo had to retire due to injury, not I am assured from playing with his ex boss but from a long week of motorcycle duty and social duties the night before..... Mark was replaced by Trevor Wood to play for the BB&O side and was drawn against Frilford's Peter Clements as last men out in the afternoon singles.
The afternoon weather turned torrential with high winds driving a combination of rain, sleet and snow at times causing some greens to hold surface water making putting a water sport rather than a golfing technique!
BB&O's handicap advantages clearly showed through in the afternoon singles, again on the red course, with only Ashley Walton and Toby Morgan overcoming their opponents 3&2 and 5&4 respectively. Lee White and Peter Clements also managed to halve their matches with BB&O taking the remaining 4 singles 4&3, 2&1,3&2 and 3&2. Drying out in the clubhouse at the end of a challenging, wet, windy and truly tiring day of competition, honours were shared with the final match result being 6:6, a very creditable performance by Frilford's finest against a really strong BB&O side.
The two Captains on the day, Harry Collins for Frilford Heath and George Wilson for BB&O congratulated all the players for their perseverance in really adverse conditions and the spirit in which the match was played, resulting in a well earned draw, identical to the result in the same match in 2012. Both teams look forward to a very successful 2013 with Frilford Heath continuing their unbeaten start to the year.
The next match for our 1st team is against a Bobby Mann scratch team from Yorkshire on Saturday March 30th at Frilford Heath. The 2013 Shaws Foursomes League campaign gets underway at home on April 20th vs Oxford City.
