Frilford Heath played host to The Oxfordshire 1st team on Saturday in the Shaw Gibbs Foursomes League. This season The Oxfordshire having played 3 matches against Oxford City, Burford and Chipping Norton are unbeaten so posed a formidable threat against our 1st team who, whilst also unbeaten, drew in their only match so far in 2013 to a strong Oxford City side. If Frilford was to challenge for this year's Shaws league title it was imperitive to beat The Oxfordshire on Saturday. Recognising the importance of the tie to both teams the Oxford Mail also sent a reporter to cover the match.
The match was played on the red course which was in great condition on a bright sunny day although gusting winds would make shot making challenging for both teams.
Dave Breslin and Joe Richardson led off against Alex Stubbs and Adam Riddle and secured a tight 2&1 win for Frilford. Ashley Walton & Peter Clements finally saw off Peter Green & Jordan Garnish with a win secured on the 18th to finish the match 2up. The Frilford pair didn't have a text book start to their match having watched Jordan Garnish boom a driver to within 90 metres of the 1st green Peter Clements soared a "safety" rescue into the trees on the right. Ashley was then forced to put a provisional ball into play and did so accordingly. The initial ball was eventually found but took 2 efforts to get it out onto the fairway! Peter Green was clearly lulled into a false sense of security watching the Frilford antics as he then rifled his 90 yarder through the back of the green into bushes requiring a drop and 2 further shots to get onto the green. Net effect Frilford 1 up at the first and thinking this must be a good day?
The final Frilford pair of Elliot Bradley & Harry Collins were not so lucky going down 5&4 to The Oxfordshires captain, Andy Stubbs and George Abbott leaving Frilford winners on the day 2:1 spoiling The Oxfordshire's unbeaten run in the process. Well done guys!
The next 1st team match is at home to Tadmarton Heath in the Shaws League on Saturday May 11th but sees a number of Frilford's regular players either on County duty or committed to playing in Championships elsewhere so could prove a pivotal match day. Frilford Heath then play Burford at home on May 18th and Chipping Norton away on June 1st
