Frilford Heath GC 1st team played host on Sunday March 10th to an Oxford University side in their final warm up match prior to the varsity match against Cambridge at Royal St Georges on 22nd and 23rd March 2013. This annual fixture was played this year over 36 holes being Foursomes Matchplay in the morning on the red course followed by Matchplay singles in the afternoon on the green course. The weather for the day whilst free of rain was bitterly cold with windchill down to about minus -8/10 and a number of players could be seen donning extra layers during the rounds to stave off frostbite!
The morning foursomes proved to be extremely tight with Frilford's only outright win being Jamie Burns and Jon Rusk 3&2 over Rob van Wijk and Max Seely. 3 of the games were halved with notably George Wood and Dave Breslin coming back from a 5 down situation to critically square the match at the 18th, great fighting spirit! New Frilford members Peter Clements and Liam Murray narrowly lost in their first representative match for the club 2&1 leaving the overall match tied all square at the end of the morning foursomes.
After lunch the 10 Frilford players set about the singles on the green course fighting not just against their OUGC opponents but also numerous bouts of icy snow flurries and cutting gusts of wind. By 17:45 all matches were successfully completed with wins for Chris Little 3&2, Peter Clements 3&1, Liam Murray 4&3, Harry Collins 4&3, Dave Breslin 7&5 and George Wood 3&2. Ashley Walton, Jamie Burns, Jon Rusk and Jake Dines all narrowly lost their games and there were no halved matches. Notably rounds of the afternoon were Liam Murray's 2 under round off scratch which for a 7 handicapper in those conditions was very classy against Matthew Reynolds(H'cap 3) from Chicago who said "I threw everything at Liam but just could not live with him, his game was awesome". Similarly, Dave Breslin's crushing 7&5 victory over David Ryan was, as Ryan said "a heck of a beating. So with the afternoon singles finishing 6:4 up to Frilford Heath and the morning foursomes halved this gave a well deserved overall victory on the day to Frilford Heath.
Playing captains, Ashley Walton and Alex Gems congratulated each of their opposing team members on a fine match and again look forward to next years event. Ashley also on behalf of his team and indeed the whole of Frilford Heath Golf Club wished Oxford University good luck and every success in their varsity match at Royal St Georges later in the month.
The next match for the 1st team is on Saturday 16th at Frilford against a traditionally strong BB&O Counties side where we hope for the same successful and naturally victorious outcome.
